Laguna de Tota Sacred Lake Overlook
Laguna de Tota stretches across the high Boyacá plateau like an inland sea, its deep blue waters reflecting the surrounding páramo grasslands and distant peaks. At over 55 square kilometers, it’s Colombia’s largest lake and sits at an elevation that creates dramatic weather changes throughout the day. The main overlook provides sweeping views across the water to the snow-capped peaks of the Eastern Cordillera, with golden frailejón plants dotting the foreground.
The overlook is reached via a well-maintained gravel road from the town of Aquitania. Weather can change rapidly from brilliant sunshine to thick fog and cold rain, so bring layers. The lake holds deep cultural significance for indigenous communities, and fishing is regulated. Best photography light occurs early morning and late afternoon when the mountains emerge from cloud cover.
