Petén Jungle Penetration Route
Into Guatemala's Maya jungle heartland
Deep in Guatemala’s northern rainforest, this archaeological overlanding route connects the major Maya sites through some of Central America’s most untouched jungle. Starting from Flores, the trail penetrates the Maya Biosphere Reserve via logging roads and ancient sacbeob (Maya stone causeways) to reach El Mirador, the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas. The Río Azul crossing during rainy season becomes a technical ford through chocolate-colored water, while the infamous Dos Lagunas checkpoint marks the point of no return into true wilderness.
Moderate to difficult depending on season, requiring high-clearance 4WD with mud tires, machete, and jungle recovery gear. Wet season (May-November) turns everything into bottomless mud; dry season hardens clay but creates lung-choking dust. Permits required from CONAP and local cooperatives. Fuel only in Flores; water purification essential. This is Guatemala’s last frontier – howler monkey dawn calls, jaguar tracks in mud, and stepping into temples where no tourist buses reach.
