Movie Flat Road Trailhead

Dirt road access point into Alabama Hills backcountry where Hollywood filmed countless westerns among the granite formations.

Movie Flat Road cuts southeast from Whitney Portal Road into the heart of Alabama Hills, passing dozens of filming locations where classic westerns like Gunga Din and How the West Was Won were shot. The trailhead area has room for several vehicles and serves as the main jumping-off point for the network of rough dirt tracks that weave between the orange granite boulders and natural arches.

Road surface starts as graded dirt but quickly becomes rocky and sandy with embedded stones. High-clearance recommended though careful stock vehicles can make it partway. Popular sunrise and sunset spot, so expect company during peak seasons.
