Sierra de Zacatecas Silver Mining Ghost Town Circuit
Colonial silver roads through mountain ghost towns.
This high desert circuit winds through the Sierra de Zacatecas on crumbling colonial roads that once carried silver trains from the mines of Cerro de la Bufa to the mints of Mexico City. The route connects ghost towns like Guadalupe and Sauceda de la Borda via mountain tracks that climb past abandoned mine shafts and stone processing mills. At Pánuco, rusted mining equipment still sits where workers dropped it when the revolution came through in 1913, leaving behind a perfectly preserved snapshot of Mexico’s silver boom.
This is an easy to moderate route suitable for stock 4WD vehicles with decent ground clearance. The rocky mining roads demand patience but nothing technical. Best season runs October through March when high desert temperatures stay reasonable and afternoon thunderstorms are rare. Carry extra fuel as gas stations are sparse, and pack water despite several natural springs along the route. The reward is camping beside 400-year-old mining ruins at 2,400 meters elevation, watching sunset paint the mountains gold while coyotes call from abandoned mine workings.
