Mangerton Mountain Wild Camping
This windswept camping area sits at roughly 1,800 feet on the eastern slopes of Mangerton Mountain, accessible via a rough track from the Muckross Road. Half a dozen level spots offer stunning dawn views across Killarney’s lakes toward the Reeks. The ground is boggy in places but firms up on the higher knolls. No facilities whatsoever — bring everything including water. Frequent mist and sudden weather changes.
The access track requires high clearance and gets progressively rougher as you climb. Best approached from late spring through early autumn when the track isn’t waterlogged. Popular with hikers heading to Devil’s Punchbowl, so expect company during good weather weekends. Leave no trace principles essential in this sensitive mountain environment.
