Joshua Tree Forest Cima Dome
Cima Dome hosts the world’s most extensive Joshua tree forest, with these iconic desert giants carpeting the gentle slopes of this massive volcanic formation. The dome itself rises nearly 1,500 feet above the surrounding desert floor, creating perfect growing conditions for the Joshua trees at elevations between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. The trees here are notably taller and more densely packed than anywhere else in their range, creating an almost park-like setting that’s particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset.
The forest is accessed via Cima Road, a well-maintained dirt road that crosses the dome from north to south. No designated trails, but you can walk among the trees anywhere that catches your eye. Spring wildflower blooms can be spectacular here when winter rains are adequate. The area offers complete solitude — you might not see another soul for hours.
