Croatan National Forest Neuseway Nature Park Connector
Coastal forest diversity with wild horses
The Croatan National Forest Neuseway Nature Park Connector follows 14 miles of sandy forest service roads through longleaf pine forests, hardwood pocosins, and salt marsh edges where black bears and wild horses roam freely. This route connects Neuseway Nature Park near Kinston with primitive camping areas deep in the Croatan, passing through areas burned by prescribed fires that maintain the unique savanna ecosystem. Key challenges include the Neuse River crossing on Forest Road 121 and navigating the deep sand sections near Cedar Point where the trail approaches the Bogue Sound salt marshes.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions, requiring 4WD for deep sand sections and seasonal flooding. The sugar sand can trap even experienced drivers, and tides affect water levels in creek crossings near the coast. Best traveled November through March when mosquitoes are manageable and sand roads are firmer. No permits required for day use, but camping requires Forest Service registration. The route showcases the incredible biodiversity of North Carolina’s coastal plain, from carnivorous plants to wild horses, making it one of the state’s most ecologically diverse off-road experiences.
