Alabama Hills Movie Road Dispersed Camping

Dispersed Camping

The Movie Road corridor through Alabama Hills offers some of the most scenic dispersed camping in California, with hundreds of established sites tucked between weathered granite boulders. The Sierra Nevada rises 10,000 feet directly west while the Inyo Mountains frame the eastern horizon. Sites range from pull-throughs for big rigs to intimate nooks between rock formations, most with fire rings built by previous visitors.

Access via Movie Flat Road from US 395 — paved for the first mile, then good gravel. Popular with rock climbers and photographers, especially during sunrise and sunset when the peaks glow. No facilities whatsoever, pack it in and pack it out. Winter camping possible but expect freezing nights above 4,000 feet.

Granite wonderland beneath the Sierra Nevada.
