Manchester State Forest Sand Hills ORV Complex
Deep sand technical in longleaf pine country
Manchester State Forest’s Sand Hills ORV Complex puts you in the thick of South Carolina’s longleaf pine ecosystem, where deep sand tracks wind through 28,000 acres of rolling terrain. The main loop follows old logging roads and fire breaks, with the gnarliest section hitting the Sand Ridge Trail where soft sand can swallow stock vehicles whole. Creek crossings at Little Lynches River add technical variety, especially after spring rains when the water runs fast and the banks turn to soup.
This is moderate to difficult terrain depending on conditions — aired-down tires and momentum are your friends in the deep sand sections. Stock 4WD with decent ground clearance can handle most of it, but recovery gear is essential for solo runs. Best tackled fall through spring when temperatures drop and the sand firms up slightly. Primitive camping allowed throughout the forest with fire permits. It’s a solid shakedown run for bigger adventures, with enough technical challenge to keep you honest.
