Sahara Desert Camping Erg Chebbi
This established camp sits at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga village, offering a mix of traditional nomad tents and simple cabins scattered around a central dining area. The camp provides mattresses, blankets, and basic meals cooked over wood fires, with shared pit toilets and wash basins filled from trucked-in water. At night, the silence is absolute except for wind through the dunes, and the star display rivals anywhere on earth.
Most overlanders drive to Merzouga village then arrange transport to the camp, though some 4WDs can make it partway into the dunes. The camp operates year-round but summers are brutally hot — spring and fall offer perfect weather for hiking the dunes at sunrise. Book ahead through village contacts or show up and negotiate, but expect to pay for the full desert experience including meals and camel treks.
