Sipsey River Gorge to Natural Bridge Explorer
Wilderness gorge access to Alabama's natural bridge
Deep in the William B. Bankhead National Forest, this rugged route follows old logging roads and creek beds through some of Alabama’s most pristine wilderness. The trail descends into the Sipsey River Gorge system, passing towering sandstone bluffs and multiple waterfalls including the spectacular 80-foot Caney Creek Falls. The route’s crown jewel is Natural Bridge, a massive sandstone arch spanning 60 feet, accessible only by navigating a technical creek crossing and boulder field that stops most vehicles at the final approach.
This difficult trail demands experienced 4WD drivers with recovery gear, rock sliders, and skid plates. Creek crossings can rise dangerously after rain, and the final mile to Natural Bridge requires careful line selection through house-sized boulders. Best tackled April through October when water levels are manageable. No permits needed, but fuel up in Double Springs—the nearest services are 40 miles away. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the national forest, with several established sites near Caney Creek. This is Alabama wilderness at its finest, rewarding prepared adventurers with solitude and geological wonders.
