Algonquin Provincial Park Canisbay Lake Campground
Canisbay Lake sits 8 kilometers into Algonquin’s interior, reached by paddling the Canoe Lake chain or hiking a challenging portage trail. The campground offers 16 primitive sites scattered along the rocky shoreline, each with fire ring and thunder box. No potable water — lake must be filtered. The setting is classic Canadian Shield: granite outcrops, towering white pines, and loon calls echoing across dark water.
Access requires advance reservations and backcountry permits. The portage trail from Highway 60 is rough and muddy, passable only by foot with gear hauled in packs. Most visitors arrive by canoe. Black flies are brutal May through July. Best accessed April through October, though shoulder seasons offer solitude and fewer bugs.
