Oak Mountain State Park Double Oak Lake Trail

Alabama's premier state park 4x4 adventure

Moderate

Oak Mountain’s backcountry roads snake through Alabama’s most diverse terrain, climbing from Shades Creek bottoms to red clay ridgetops that’ll test your line choice. The Double Oak Lake circuit kicks off near the main entrance, following old logging roads that cross Shades Creek multiple times before ascending to the park’s highest elevations. Creek crossings range from ankle-deep rock gardens to muddy wallows that’ll swallow stock tires, while the ridge sections demand careful throttle control on loose shale and clay.

This is moderate 4WD territory — stock trucks with good tires handle it fine, but you’ll want recovery gear for the creek sections and wet weather turns everything to Alabama gumbo. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer heat can be brutal. No permits needed, just the state park entry fee. Dispersed camping isn’t allowed in the park, but established campgrounds are available. You’re getting 20 miles of varied Alabama terrain without leaving the Birmingham metro area — rare combination of convenience and challenge.
