Kakadu National Park Gunlom Falls Campground
Gunlom Falls Campground sits at the base of a dramatic sandstone escarpment in Kakadu’s southern reaches, offering 40 unpowered sites along Jim Jim Creek. The campground serves as base camp for the Gunlom plunge pool — a spectacular swimming hole at the top of the falls reached by a steep 1km climb. Facilities are basic but solid: drop toilets, cold showers, and bore water. Sites are generous and well-spaced under paperbarks and pandanus. Crocodiles inhabit the creek, so swimming is limited to designated areas only.
Access requires a 37km drive on unsealed road from the Kakadu Highway — corrugated but manageable for 2WD in dry season. The road becomes impassable during the wet (November-April) and the campground closes entirely. Book ahead during the dry season as it’s one of Kakadu’s most popular spots.
