Convict Lake Campground
Convict Lake sits at 7,583 feet in a glacial cirque surrounded by dramatic granite peaks, with 88 sites spread along the lake’s eastern shore. The campground fills quickly during summer months, particularly on weekends when anglers and hikers flood the area. Sites are relatively open with scattered Jeffrey pines providing limited shade, but the lake views and mountain backdrop more than compensate. Water spigots and vault toilets are well-maintained throughout the campground.
Access requires a 2.5-mile paved road turnoff from US-395, with the final stretch winding down to the lake through aspen groves that explode with color in late September. The area typically opens by late May and closes with the first heavy snow, usually by November. Afternoon winds can be fierce, so stake down your setup well. Reserve well ahead for summer visits.
