Sumter National Forest Parsons Mountain Trail

Remote Piedmont backcountry with granite challenges

Moderate

The Parsons Mountain Trail cuts through some of the most remote backcountry in Sumter National Forest’s Enoree District, following old logging roads that haven’t seen regular maintenance since the 1980s. You’ll navigate washed-out creek crossings at Mill Creek and dodge granite boulders the size of pickup trucks while climbing 800 feet to the ridgeline. The trail passes the ruins of an old CCC camp near Mile 4, where stone foundations still mark where Depression-era workers carved roads through these hills.

This is solid intermediate territory requiring high clearance and decent articulation for the creek crossings. Stock 4WD handles it fine, but you’ll want recovery gear for the muddy sections after rain. Best tackled March through November when creeks are manageable. No permits needed, but fuel up in Union before heading out—you’re 20+ miles from civilization once committed. The payoff is total solitude and some of the best dispersed camping in South Carolina’s upstate.
