Donnelley Wildlife Management Area Salt Marsh Circuit
Historic rice plantation marsh roads
The Donnelley WMA preserves 8,000 acres of former rice plantation turned waterfowl habitat, where earthen dikes built by enslaved labor in the 1700s still control tidal flow through salt marshes and freshwater impoundments. The main circuit follows maintenance roads across Bear Island Creek to reach observation blinds and old rice mill foundations, passing through spartina grass that stretches unbroken to the horizon. High tide can flood low-lying sections, while low tide exposes oyster beds and creates challenging mud conditions on the access roads.
Easy to moderate depending on tidal conditions and recent rainfall – stock vehicles handle dry conditions, but high-clearance helps during wet periods. Best visited during fall and winter waterfowl seasons when wildlife activity peaks and summer heat subsides. Bring insect repellent year-round and check tide tables before heading out. The Colleton River boundary offers excellent primitive camping spots with sunrise views across the marsh, though you’ll need to pack everything in. Cell service is spotty but emergency coverage exists near the main road.
