Window Rock Navajo Tribal Park
This massive natural sandstone window frames the Arizona sky like a portal to another world. The arch rises 47 feet and spans nearly 105 feet, carved by wind and water over millions of years. At its base sits the Navajo Nation capital complex, making this the only tribal headquarters built beneath a natural monument. The contrast is striking — modern government buildings dwarfed by ancient stone that’s held sacred meaning for centuries.
The park sits right off Highway 264, paved access all the way to the small parking area. Interpretive trails loop around the formation’s base, though climbing on the arch itself is prohibited out of respect for its cultural significance. Best light comes in late afternoon when the sandstone glows deep red. Summer brings crowds and heat; spring and fall offer cooler temps and smaller groups.
