Twelve Apostles Marine National Park Limestone Stacks
Eight limestone stacks remain of the original formation — despite the name, there were never twelve. These 150-foot towers rise from churning Southern Ocean waters, carved over 20 million years from soft limestone cliffs. The main viewing platform provides dramatic sunset views, while helicopter tours offer aerial perspectives of the ongoing erosion. Weather changes rapidly here, with wind gusts reaching 60+ mph and sudden fog rolling in from the ocean.
Access via the Great Ocean Road is straightforward, with large sealed parking areas and walkways to multiple viewpoints. The visitor center stays open until sunset during summer months. Port Campbell, 10 minutes east, offers fuel and supplies. Winter brings the most dramatic seas but also the harshest weather — layers and wind protection essential year-round.
