Mount Washington Auto Road Summit Observatory

Point of Interest

At 6,288 feet, Mount Washington’s summit houses the weather observatory that recorded the world’s highest surface wind speed at 231 mph. The Auto Road — open since 1861 — climbs 4,618 vertical feet through multiple climate zones, from temperate forest to alpine tundra. The toll road is paved but steep (12% grades), narrow, and unforgiving. Weather can shift from sunshine to whiteout conditions in minutes, even in summer.

The road operates roughly May through October, weather permitting, with a hefty toll ($39 for car and driver in 2023). RVs and trailers prohibited. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent on the climb. The summit offers stunning 360-degree views on clear days, but visibility can drop to zero without warning. Bring layers — it’s typically 35 degrees cooler at the top.
