Dinosaur National Monument Gates of Lodore Overlook
The Gates of Lodore viewpoint looks down into a 3,000-foot-deep canyon where the Green River begins its wild ride through Dinosaur National Monument. Named by John Wesley Powell in 1869, the gates mark where calm waters transform into Class III-IV rapids that have claimed dozens of boats over the decades. The overlook sits on the canyon rim, offering views upstream toward Brown’s Park and downstream into the shadowy gorge. A short interpretive trail leads to multiple viewpoints.
Access via the Gates of Lodore Road, 13 miles of good gravel from Highway 318. The road can get rough after heavy rains but handles most vehicles. No services at the overlook — bring water and snacks. Best light for photography comes in late afternoon when sun penetrates the deep canyon.
