Machu Picchu Ancient Inca Citadel Overlook

Point of Interest

The Lost City of the Incas sits at 7,972 feet on a narrow ridge between Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu peaks. Built around 1450 CE and abandoned during Spanish conquest, the terraced city contains 150 buildings including temples, residences, and agricultural terraces. The classic postcard view comes from the Guard House overlook above the main complex. Daily visitor limits are strictly enforced — advance reservations mandatory.

No vehicle access — reach via train from Ollantaytambo or hike the Inca Trail. Book months ahead, especially for dry season (May-September). The citadel opens at 6 AM; sunrise tickets sell out fast. Overlanders typically base in Cusco or Sacred Valley towns, storing rigs while taking the 2-4 day rail/ruins excursion.
