Skeleton Coast Shipwreck Graveyard
The Skeleton Coast earned its name from hundreds of shipwrecks scattered along 500km of treacherous coastline. Most accessible wrecks lie between Terrace Bay and Torra Bay — rusted steel hulls half-buried in sand dunes, some dating back over a century. The Eduard Bohlen, stranded inland after decades of shifting sand, sits 400 meters from today’s waterline like a desert mirage.
Access requires a 4WD permit and careful tide timing — the beach route can trap vehicles at high tide. Winds are relentless, carrying sand that’ll strip paint and etch glass. Most wrecks are unmarked; local knowledge helps locate the best specimens. The desolation is absolute — fuel up in Swakopmund and carry everything you need.
