Tallulah Gorge Rim Trail FS Road 70 Technical Access
Punishing descent to Georgia's most dramatic gorge
FS Road 70 drops from the Tallulah Gorge rim through some of Georgia’s most punishing terrain, descending 800 feet in just two miles to reach overlooks of the legendary Class V rapids that made this gorge famous among kayakers worldwide. The trail follows an abandoned logging road that was carved out in the 1920s, with rock ledges, off-camber turns, and granite slabs that demand perfect line choice and mechanical sympathy. The Sidewinder section at mile 1.3 earned its name from drivers who’ve slid sideways down the granite face — it’s a momentum puzzle that’s humbled plenty of big trucks.
This is expert-level territory requiring experienced drivers, proper recovery gear, and vehicles with rock sliders, skid plates, and low-range transfer cases. Winch points are scarce, so travel with a partner and know your equipment. Best attempted during dry conditions April through June or September through October. No permits needed but parking is extremely limited at the rim. The payoff justifies the punishment — views into one of the deepest gorges in the Southeast and technical driving that’ll either break your truck or make you a better wheelman.
