Bagan Ancient Temple Plain
This sprawling 26-square-mile plain contains the remnants of over 10,000 temples built between the 11th and 13th centuries, with roughly 2,200 structures still standing today. The red dirt roads wind between stupas, temples, and pagodas in various states of preservation, creating an otherworldly landscape best explored by motorbike, e-bike, or on foot. Sunrise and sunset from temple terraces offer spectacular views across the Irrawaddy River valley.
The main archaeological zone requires an entrance fee and has restricted vehicle access, but many temples are accessible via the network of sandy tracks. Dry season (November to February) offers the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures. Some temples allow climbing for views, though rules change frequently to protect the structures.
