Christ the Redeemer Statue Corcovado Mountain
The 125-foot Art Deco statue of Christ the Redeemer stands atop Corcovado Mountain in Tijuca National Park, 2,300 feet above Rio de Janeiro. Completed in 1931, it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and provides 360-degree views of Rio’s beaches, favelas, and landmarks like Sugarloaf Mountain and Copacabana. Access is by cog train, van, or hiking trail through Atlantic rainforest.
The site gets extremely crowded, especially during Brazilian holidays and summer months (December-February). Weather can change rapidly with afternoon thunderstorms common. The cog train runs regularly but requires advance booking during peak season. Driving to the base station in Cosme Velho requires navigating Rio’s challenging traffic and limited parking.
