Devils Tower National Monument
Devils Tower stands like a monolithic beacon on the rolling Wyoming plains, a 50-million-year-old volcanic neck with vertical columns that attract climbers from around the world. The tower rises 867 feet above the Belle Fourche River valley, visible for miles in every direction. A paved 1.3-mile loop trail circles the base, offering views of the dramatic rock formations and occasional glimpses of climbers on the walls. The visitor center provides cultural context about the site’s significance to Lakota, Cheyenne, and other Plains tribes who consider it sacred.
Access is straightforward via Highway 24 from I-90, with the monument open year-round though services are seasonal. The climbing season runs April through October, with voluntary closures in June to respect Native American ceremonies. Parking can fill up on summer weekends, especially during the Sturgis rally in August. The prairie dog town near the entrance road is worth a stop for wildlife viewing.
