Canning Stock Route Well 23 Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

Well 23 sits roughly halfway along the legendary Canning Stock Route, marking one of the most reliable camping spots on this 1,850km desert crossing. The site features the restored windmill and water trough from the original cattle droving days, plus several informal camping areas in the scrub around the wellhead. Sandy ground with scattered spinifex grass makes for decent sleeping, and the well structure provides some wind protection. Capacity for 8-10 vehicles with thoughtful spacing.

Access requires serious 4WD preparation — deep sand, corrugations, and zero services for hundreds of kilometers in either direction. The well water is brackish but suitable for washing; carry all drinking water. Dry season (May through September) only; summer heat is lethal. GPS essential, as tracks can be obscured by wind. This is expedition-level outback travel — mechanical failure here means serious consequences.
