Alabama Hills Dispersed Camping Area
Sprawling across the eastern Sierra Nevada foothills, this legendary dispersed camping area offers hundreds of established sites scattered among massive granite boulders and volcanic formations. Sites range from pull-through spots for big rigs to tucked-away alcoves perfect for a single tent. Most sites have existing fire rings, and the area can handle 200+ rigs during peak season without feeling crowded thanks to the maze-like terrain.
Access is via Movie Flat Road and Whitney Portal Road — both paved to the boundary, then maintained dirt roads throughout the camping area. Peak season runs March through May and September through November. Summer gets brutally hot, winter brings snow. No water or facilities, so come self-contained. Popular with climbers, photographers, and anyone wanting iconic Sierra views without campground fees.
