Pilbara Mitchell Plateau Dispersed Area
The Mitchell Plateau sits 2,000 feet above the Kimberley coast, accessed by one of Australia’s most challenging 4WD tracks. Dispersed camping scattered across the ironstone plateau offers space for a dozen rigs, with commanding views over endless red country. Mitchell Falls — four massive tiers dropping 260 feet — lies a 45-minute walk from camp. Aboriginal rock galleries dot the escarpment, some over 40,000 years old. Zero facilities, zero shade; just red dirt, spinifex grass, and some of the most pristine wilderness left on the continent.
The 160km track from Kalumburu Road demands modified 4WD with serious ground clearance — jagged rocks will shred sidewalls and puncture fuel tanks. Dry season only (May-September); the track becomes impassable bog during the wet. Pack everything: water, fuel, food, spare parts. Nearest resupply is Wyndham, 350km south. Fire restrictions apply May through October.
