Delta National Forest Yazoo River Levee Explorer
WWII prisoner camp remnants along the Delta levees
The Yazoo River Levee Explorer traces the historic flood control system built by the Corps of Engineers in the 1920s, running along the crown of earthen levees that protected Delta cotton plantations for generations. This gravel and dirt track offers commanding views across the Yazoo River bottoms while passing concrete structures from WWII when the area served as a prisoner-of-war camp. The route connects multiple boat launches and fishing spots, with side spurs dropping down to oxbow lakes where alligators sun themselves on fallen cypress logs.
Easy driving suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though the loose gravel crown can get sketchy in wet conditions. The levee road is well-maintained by levee district crews but narrow enough that meeting oncoming traffic requires careful negotiation. Spring and fall offer the best wildlife viewing when waterfowl migrations fill the backwaters. No permits needed, primitive camping allowed in designated areas along the levee. Rolling, Mississippi has the closest fuel and supplies. Decent cell coverage along most of the route thanks to elevation.
