Choctaw Lake Backcountry Circuit
Sand, pine, and solitude in northeast Mississippi
The Choctaw Lake circuit winds through some of Mississippi’s most remote national forest, where sandy fire roads disappear into dense stands of longleaf pine and the only sound is your differential working through loose soil. Starting from Forest Road 901 near the Alabama border, this loop threads between wetland bottoms and rolling pine hills, with the ghost of an old CCC camp marking the halfway point where most folks stop to air down and check their diff oil.
This is solid intermediate territory—stock 4WD handles it fine, but the sand gets loose after rain and those creek crossings can surprise you. Spring through fall works best, though summer means bugs and heat. No permits needed, water’s scarce except at the creek crossings, but dispersed camping is allowed throughout the forest. What you get is 20 miles of genuine Mississippi backcountry, the kind where your phone dies and you remember why you bought that truck in the first place.
