Pearl River Wildlife Management Area Honey Island Swamp East Bank Technical Circuit
Deep swamp technical driving at Louisiana's doorstep
The Pearl River forms Mississippi’s eastern boundary with Louisiana, and this technical loop takes you deep into Honey Island Swamp via maintenance roads that weren’t built for weekend warriors. You’ll ford Hobolochitto Creek twice, navigate around massive cypress stumps, and thread needle-tight passages between ancient tupelo gums that’ve been standing since before the Civil War. The highlight is the Old River Channel crossing near mile marker 8 — a shallow ford that turns into knee-deep soup after any decent rain.
This is genuine swamp driving that’ll test your mud tires and your nerve. Stock 4WD won’t cut it here — you need aggressive tread, recovery gear, and preferably a buddy truck because cell service dies the moment you leave the highway. Best tackled during dry season (October through March) when water levels drop and the snakes are less active. The payoff is camping on sandy ridges surrounded by some of the wildest country left in Mississippi, with nothing but owl calls and the occasional splash of a bull gator to break the silence.
