Tombigbee National Forest Owl Creek Indian Mounds Loop
Ancient mounds, modern mud, serious crossings.
The Owl Creek Indian Mounds Loop cuts through some of the most culturally significant and technically demanding terrain in Tombigbee National Forest. Starting near the historic Indian mounds dating back 1,000 years, this route immediately drops into Owl Creek bottoms where multiple water crossings and mudhole challenges separate the weekend warriors from serious dirt runners. The route passes three separate Choctaw burial sites before climbing onto the ridge system that overlooks the Tombigbee River valley.
This is expert-level territory requiring lockers, recovery gear, and preferably a spotter for the creek crossings that can run waist-deep after spring rains. Best tackled April through October when water levels drop, though even summer crossings demand respect. No permits needed, but dispersed camping is allowed throughout the forest. What you get is raw Mississippi backcountry combined with genuine archaeological significance—plus the kind of technical driving that’ll test your rig and your nerve.
