Leaf River Sand Hills Technical Loop

Mississippi's toughest sand driving through ghost camps.

Expert

This challenging sand track follows old logging tramways through the Leaf River Sand Hills, part of Mississippi’s longleaf pine restoration efforts on former International Paper lands. The route connects abandoned turpentine camps from the 1920s naval stores industry, where you’ll find rusted stills and concrete foundations hidden in wiregrass prairies that haven’t seen fire suppression in decades. The infamous ‘Sugar Sand Sink’ at mile 8 has claimed more rigs than any other single obstacle in Mississippi — GPS coordinates 31.0892, -89.4567 if you want to test your recovery skills.

Expert-level difficulty demands serious sand driving skills, aired-down tires, and recovery gear. The deep sugar sand can stop a locked truck dead in its tracks, and cell service is nonexistent in the 15-mile dead zone between highway crossings. Attempt only during dry conditions from June through October — spring rains turn the clay hardpan into quicksand. No official camping, but primitive sites exist along Leaf River access points. This is Mississippi’s best sand training ground and a glimpse of what the Gulf Coast looked like before development.
