DeSoto National Forest Airey Lake Fire Tower Circuit
Historic fire towers and pristine longleaf forest
The Airey Lake Fire Tower Circuit strings together 31 miles of well-maintained gravel forest roads in DeSoto National Forest, connecting four Depression-era fire towers still standing from the 1930s. The route circles Airey Lake’s 3,200-acre impoundment, built by the CCC in 1936, and passes through some of Mississippi’s finest longleaf pine restoration areas. Tower Road climbs 120 feet to the restored Airey Tower, offering panoramic views across 50 miles of unbroken forest canopy.
This easy scenic drive works for any vehicle with moderate ground clearance, including well-driven passenger cars in dry conditions. The gravel stays firm year-round except during heavy spring rains when a few low spots get soft. No technical obstacles, but wildlife is abundant—black bears are common, so secure food properly. Several established campgrounds along the lake provide amenities, while dispersed camping is allowed throughout the forest. Best enjoyed fall through spring when temperatures drop and the longleaf understory burns create incredible wildflower displays.
