Finger Lakes National Forest Service Road System

Abandoned farmland tracks in wine country.

Easy

The Finger Lakes National Forest sits on 16,000 acres of reclaimed Depression-era farmland, and its service road network tells that story in grass-track two-tracks and gated maintenance roads. The main arteries—Burnt Hill Road and Potomac Road—connect a web of narrower routes that wind through old pastures now reverting to forest. What makes this unique is the history: stone foundations from abandoned farms dot the landscape, and you’ll cross multiple seasonal streams as you navigate between the manicured vineyards of Seneca Lake’s east shore and the deeper woods toward Cayuga.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent weather and which tracks you choose. Most routes handle with high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, though the grass tracks get slippery when wet. Open year-round but best spring through fall when the gates aren’t locked for wildlife protection. Free camping at designated sites throughout the forest, though facilities are primitive. The real draw is accessibility—this is overlanding you can do on a weekend without traveling to the Adirondacks, plus the Finger Lakes wine country makes for solid resupply and good eating after a day bouncing through the backcountry.
