Jean Lafitte National Historical Park Barataria Preserve
This 23,000-acre preserve protects some of the last intact hardwood forests, swamps, and marshes in the Mississippi River Delta. The Boardwalk Trail stretches 1.8 miles through cypress-tupelo swamp on elevated walkways, offering guaranteed wildlife viewing—alligators, herons, ibis, and turtles. The Visitor Center houses exhibits on pirate history and delta ecology, plus restrooms and water fountains.
Access via Highway 45 south of New Orleans, about 30 minutes from downtown. The boardwalk stays open dawn to dusk year-round, though summer heat and mosquitoes can be brutal. Best wildlife viewing happens early morning or late afternoon. No camping allowed, but plenty of day-use parking for rigs up to 40 feet.
