Bayou Bartholomew Natural Area
This state natural area protects a pristine stretch of Bayou Bartholomew, the world’s longest bayou at 375 miles. The primitive camping area sits on high ground overlooking the dark water, surrounded by massive bald cypress and tupelo trees draped in Spanish moss. No facilities except vault toilets — pack everything in and out. During spring floods, parts of the area can become inaccessible.
Access is via gravel parish roads that can be rough after heavy rains. The area is managed for wildlife habitat, so expect mosquitoes and humidity from May through September. Best visited during cooler months when bugs are manageable and water levels are stable.
