Brainard Lake Road Trailhead

Trailhead

This trailhead complex at the end of Brainard Lake Road serves as the launching point for some of Colorado’s most popular high alpine trails, including routes to Blue Lake, Lake Isabelle, and the Continental Divide. The road itself becomes a 4WD track beyond the gate, but private vehicles are restricted during peak season (roughly July through Labor Day) when a mandatory shuttle runs from Nederland.

During the restricted period, you’ll need to park at the Nederland Park-N-Ride and take the shuttle. Outside peak season, high-clearance vehicles can drive the rough dirt road to the lake, though it’s slow going with plenty of rocks and ruts. Multiple trailheads branch off from the lake area, all requiring permits for overnight wilderness camping.
