Rwenzori Mountains Margherita Peak Access Route

Drive to equatorial glaciers in Africa's mystic peaks

Moderate

The Rwenzori access route follows forgotten copper mining roads built by Belgian colonials in the 1950s, climbing from tropical lowlands at 900 meters to the Elena Hut basecamp at 4,500 meters on Africa’s third-highest massif. These Mountains of the Moon rise impossibly from Uganda’s western border, their glacier-capped peaks shrouded in mist while giant lobelias and groundsels create an alien landscape that stopped Ptolemy’s ancient cartographers cold. The route passes through distinct vegetation zones — from elephant paths in montane forest to technical rock sections where mining equipment still rusts in the alpine zones.

Moderate to difficult depending on weather, requiring high-clearance 4WD with low-range gearing and recovery gear for the upper technical sections. The dry seasons from December to February and June to August offer the best conditions, though equatorial weather changes in minutes at altitude. No permits required for vehicle access, but camping is limited to designated sites managed by the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services. Expect frequent fog, afternoon thunderstorms, and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Africa. This route rewards with solitude, pristine wilderness, and the rare chance to drive within sight of equatorial glaciers.
