The Okavango Delta isn’t just a postcard — it’s 600 miles of deep sand, seasonal floodplains, and mokoro pole marks where elephants drink at dawn. This route cuts through Moremi Game Reserve’s eastern boundary, crossing the Khwai River at the old veterinary fence line before threading between Chief’s Island and the mainland through corridors that shift with each flood season. You’ll follow ancient cattle paths turned game trails, dodging hippo pools and navigating around termite mounds the size of small buildings.
This is proper African overlanding — stock 4WD won’t cut it here. You need diff locks, recovery gear, and enough fuel for 400km without a pump. Dry season (May to October) offers the best crossing conditions, though water levels can still surprise you at Boro River. Permits required through Botswana Department of Wildlife. The payoff?
