Skippers Road
Gold rush road carved from cliffsides above Shotover River
The 27-kilometer Skippers Road clings to near-vertical schist bluffs 100 meters above the Shotover River, where gold miners blasted this death-defying route in the 1880s. You’ll navigate through Pinchers Bluff’s notorious narrow section where the road is literally carved from the cliff face, passing abandoned mining settlements and crossing single-lane bridges with drops that’ll make your passenger white-knuckle the door handle. The Shotover Jet boats look like toys from up here.
This is genuine expert-level driving requiring high clearance 4WD and nerves of steel — no room for error on the exposed shelf sections. Commercial tour operators drive it daily, but rental car companies specifically ban it for good reason. Best tackled October through April when weather’s stable, and fuel up in Queenstown as there’s nothing out here. You’re rewarded with some of New Zealand’s most dramatic alpine scenery and a proper taste of what it took to chase gold in this unforgiving country.
