Ninety Mile Beach
The legendary beach drive that’s actually about 90 kilometers long, not miles. Hard-packed sand creates a natural highway along the Tasman Sea, accessible to most vehicles at low tide. Popular with overlanders as both a destination and access route to Cape Reinga. Massive waves, endless views, and the occasional fishing contest.
Tide timing is critical — check local conditions before committing. Sand gets softer at high tide and can trap unwary drivers. Entry points at both Ahipara and Te Paki Stream. Watch for fishing competitions and 4WD tour groups. Beautiful but respect the ocean — people have been caught by surprise swells.
