Severobaykalsk Tundra Base Camp
This windswept clearing along Baikal’s northern shore holds the remnants of a BAM railway construction camp from the Soviet era. Concrete pads and rusted equipment mark where thousands of workers lived during the brutal Siberian winters of the 1970s. The site offers direct lake access and stunning sunrise views across Baikal’s deepest waters, with the Barguzin Range reflected on calm mornings.
Access via a rough track from the BAM railway maintenance road requires high clearance and can be muddy during spring thaw. No facilities remain, but the concrete foundations provide level parking spots. Bring everything including water – the nearest resupply is back in Severobaykalsk 23 miles south.
