Lindis Pass to Ahuriri Valley Circuit
Golden tussock high country at its finest.
The Lindis Pass to Ahuriri Valley circuit links two spectacular high country roads through the heart of Central Otago’s golden tussock landscape. Starting from the sealed Lindis Pass highway, the route drops into the Ahuriri River valley on station tracks that wind through schist tors and braided rivers beneath the Barrier Range. Merino sheep stations have worked this land for over a century, and the 4WD tracks follow old musterer routes that connected the Mackenzie Basin to the Waitaki Valley goldfields.
This moderate route suits any high-clearance vehicle but demands caution at numerous river fords – spring snowmelt and summer thunderstorms can turn gentle streams into torrents within hours. No permits required for the public sections, though some tracks cross private station land where courtesy is essential. Best tackled October through April when river levels are predictable and weather stable. The circuit offers classic Central Otago scenery – endless golden grasslands, razor-sharp mountain ridges, and that unique high country light that photographers chase across the world.
