Skippers Canyon Road
World's most dangerous scenic drive
Skippers Canyon Road clings to vertical rock faces 300 meters above the Shotover River, carved by hand tools during the 1890s gold rush when fortunes were won and lost in these remote gorges. The 27-kilometer route follows mining-era tracks blasted from schist cliffs, with sections barely wide enough for one vehicle and no barriers between you and the abyss. Windy Point offers the pucker-factor summit — a series of hairpins where the road narrows to single-lane with 1000-foot drops and zero forgiveness for driver error.
This is expert-level driving requiring absolute vehicle control and nerves. Most rental companies ban the route entirely, and for good reason — the combination of narrow shelf road, loose rock, and sheer exposure has claimed multiple vehicles over the decades. Best tackled during stable weather March through May or September through November. No permits needed but commercial operators require special licenses. The reward is access to some of New Zealand’s most pristine goldfield ruins and the knowledge you’ve conquered one of the planet’s most intimidating mountain roads.
