Verkhoyansky Ridge Ice Road Circuit
World's coldest overland route through Pole of Cold
Built to supply remote diamond and gold mines in the Verkhoyansk Mountains, this winter road operates only when rivers freeze solid enough to support loaded trucks. The route crosses 47 frozen waterways including the mighty Yana and Adycha rivers, threading between peaks where Verkhoyansk holds the record for coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth at -67.8°C. The infamous Batagay Crater – a massive permafrost crater visible from space – marks the halfway point where Soviet mining operations exposed the underlying ice wedges.
Extreme difficulty requiring specialized Arctic equipment, engine block heaters, and emergency survival gear rated to -80°C. Only accessible December through March when ice bridges are safe. Requires convoy travel with support vehicle and satellite communication – breakdowns at -60°C can kill within hours. Fuel must be treated with arctic additives, and diesel vehicles need constant warming. No services for 400+ kilometers. The experience of driving through Earth’s coldest inhabited region and seeing the Aurora Borealis in perpetual winter darkness is unforgettable for the properly prepared.
