Real de Catorce Ghost Town Route
Through the tunnel to Mexico's ghost town in the sky
Real de Catorce sits at 9,000 feet in the Sierra de Catorce, accessible only through the narrow Ogarrio Tunnel blasted through solid rock in 1901. This former silver boom town peaked at 40,000 residents before collapsing into one of Mexico’s most haunting ghost towns. The approach winds through high desert and agave fields, then squeezes through the 1.5-mile tunnel barely wide enough for one vehicle. Above, cobblestone streets connect abandoned mansions, the mint where silver pesos were struck, and the church where pilgrims still come seeking miracles.
This is easy to moderate difficulty — any vehicle can make the tunnel, but parking is tight and backing up impossible if you meet oncoming traffic. The tunnel requires headlights and nerves; claustrophobic drivers should reconsider. Best visited October through March when desert temperatures drop. No permits needed, but expect crowds during religious festivals. Stock up on fuel in Matehuala. You’ll experience one of Mexico’s most unique ghost towns, plus some of the clearest night skies in North America.
