Teno Mountains Shepherds’ Road
Volcanic goat paths to Europe's loneliest lighthouse
The shepherds who carved these tracks into Teno’s volcanic cliffs probably never imagined Land Cruisers would follow their goat paths, but here we are. This network of stone-laid trails connects the village of Masca — population 90 — to the lighthouse at Punta de Teno through some of the most dramatic terrain in the Canary Islands. The road drops 3,000 feet in elevation through laurel forests and barren volcanic badlands that look more like Mars than Europe, with views across to La Gomera and the endless Atlantic.
This is technical driving on narrow, exposed tracks with steep drops and no safety barriers — definitely not for nervous drivers or large vehicles. You need a compact 4WD, good tires, and nerves of steel for the switchbacks above Masca village. Access is restricted during high fire danger, typically July-September, and you’ll want to start early to avoid tourist traffic. The payoff is reaching one of Europe’s most isolated lighthouses and experiencing landscape that feels like the literal edge of the continent, which it essentially is.
